What is assessment integrity?
Assessment integrity is the extent to which a score tells you about the learner rather than about the circumstances of the attempt. It covers whether the person who answered is the person enrolled, and whether the material was available to them while they answered. An unproctored assessment still carries integrity properties; they are simply weaker ones.
Why an unproctored score is still evidence, within limits
The cost of weak assessment integrity lands somewhere else entirely, in an enforcement action where the organisation's training evidence is set aside as unreliable. Few enterprises can proctor annual compliance training for every employee, and nobody should pretend otherwise. What matters is that the controls actually applied are stated on the record, so the weight the evidence can bear is known in advance. Overstating the conditions leaves an organisation worse off than documenting a modest control honestly.
- Integrity controls determine how much weight a completion record can bear.
- A score obtained with the policy open measures retrieval rather than knowledge.
- Shared answer keys circulate within days of a mandatory rollout.
- Stating the control honestly protects the evidence that does exist.
How assessment integrity works
- The integrity requirement is set per assessment according to the consequence of a false pass.
- Items are drawn from a larger pool so that two learners seldom receive the same set.
- Option order is randomised within each item presented.
- Timing and attempt limits are configured and recorded with the attempt.
- The controls in force are stamped onto the completion record itself.
How assessment integrity is evaluated
Integrity is assessed by looking for patterns no honest cohort would produce. Examine the following across attempts rather than per learner:
- distribution of completion times against the length of the assessment
- response patterns identical across learners in the same cohort
- pass rates on items whose answers have circulated
- difference between first attempt and later attempt scores
- share of attempts with the applicable integrity controls recorded
Limitations, risks and common failure modes
- Answer keys are shared internally faster than the item pool can be refreshed.
- Unlimited attempts turn an assessment into an exercise in elimination.
- Proctoring claims appear in policy documents that the platform never enforced.
- Integrity controls are configured once and never reviewed as the pool ages.
