What is inline assistance?
Inline assistance is guidance presented at the field an applicant is completing, at the moment they are completing it. It answers the question that field provokes rather than describing the form as a whole. The test of inline assistance is whether the applicant has to leave the form to understand what is being asked.
Also called: Contextual help, In-context guidance
Why help documentation is read by almost nobody
Every long regulated form has a guidance document attached to it, and analytics on that document show single digit open rates. The applicant is not being careless. They are halfway through one field and they want one sentence, where a forty page annexure supplies forty pages. Inline assistance exists because the distance between a question and its answer decides whether the answer is read at all.
- Guidance separated from the form competes with the applicant's intention to finish.
- An answer given at the field is read, where a manual is merely downloaded.
- Inline text can carry a regulator's wording without expanding the form itself.
- The same assistance reduces the volume of queries reaching a support desk.
How inline assistance works
- Each field is mapped to the question an applicant actually asks about it.
- Support content is decomposed from documents into statements attached per field.
- Assistance appears on focus or on error, close enough to read without scrolling.
- Examples are drawn from accepted submissions rather than written as illustrations.
- Wording governed by a regulator is reproduced verbatim with its source recorded.
- Each piece of assistance is versioned, so a past submission can be explained.
How inline assistance is evaluated
Inline assistance is assessed by what happens at the field it accompanies rather than by how complete the content is. Compare the following for fields with assistance and without:
- abandonment rate at the individual field
- error rate on first entry into that field
- time spent in the field before an entry is accepted
- support queries attributable to that field
- share of applicants who open the assistance at all
Limitations, risks and common failure modes
- Assistance written by the policy owner reproduces the clause nobody could parse.
- Help that obscures the field it explains is dismissed before it is read.
- Content is authored once at launch and diverges from the form within a cycle.
- Assistance is added to every field, so the applicant stops noticing any of it.
